J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge, 1 Wildlife Drive, is named for the editorial cartoonist and pioneer conservationist. The refuge encompasses more than 6,000 acres of wetlands and island uplands on the north side of the island. Facilities include canoe trails, a bird-watching tower, a wildlife drive, an interpretive trail and marinas. A list of more than 200 bird species that can be viewed is available from the headquarters at the refuge entrance. Refuge is open Saturday through Thursday 7:30-30 minutes before dusk. Visitor center open daily 9-5, November through April; 9-4 rest of the year. Phone for holiday hours. J.N.
