EU Organic Logo Competition

In an effort to increase consumer protection and fair competition while stimulating the use of organic ingredients, the European Commission has made the use of an EU organic logo obligatory for certain organic products – namely pre-packaged organic products that originate in the EU and meet the labelling standards – starting in July 2010. To develop a new, appealing and easy to recognise EU organic logo, the European Commission has launched a logo competition that is open to all design and art students across the EU.

Who can participate?

All European citizens 18 or older that are registered at an institution of higher education for art or design based in the EU Member States may participate. The institution should offer studies in fine arts, graphic design, visual communications, media design or a related discipline. Individuals who have recently graduated from one of the abovementioned institutions in 2008 or 2009 may also take part.

Task of the logo competition

The participants are asked to submit logos that embody the idea of organic farming and production. The logos should be universally appealing for people all across the EU and should not contain any text elements that would require translation. The winning logo will appear in digital and analogue media, on variety of packaging, so participants should take this into consideration while developing their design.

How does it work?

The logo designs for the competition can be uploaded onto the special competition website http://www.ec.europa.eu/organic-logo until 25 June, 2009. Each participant may only submit one logo. There are no restrictions concerning the graphical techniques used to develop the logo, but the logo must also be printable in a small-scale. After the close of the competition, a jury made up of leading design professionals and organic farming experts will make a pre-selection of the logos submitted to the competition. These logos will be featured on the website, and all European citizens will be invited to vote online for their favourite.

Evaluation criteria

Jury members will review all eligible entries and make a pre-selection according to their personal expertise, using the following criteria: - Creativity and originality of the logo design - Consideration of the diverse aspects of organic food and farming - Comprehensibility without using words - Universal appeal - Clean design - Clarity of presentation - Timeless design

Prizes

After the winning logo has been chosen, the first prize winner, one runner-up and a second runner-up will be invited to an award ceremony in Brussels, where the European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development will present them with the 6,000 euro, 3,500 euro and 2,500 euro prizes respectively. The ceremony will take place in the summer of 2010.
