• 1963: Legendary singer Patsy Cline, who still influences both country and pop singers, died in a plane crash at the peak of her career.

• 1953: Joseph Stalin, who had exercised absolute authority in the USSR since Lenin's death in 1924, died at the age of 73, possibly as a result of poisoning. The Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev, one of the millions whom Stalin tormented, also died on this day.

• 1946: Sir Winston Churchill first uttered the phrase "an Iron Curtain," in a speech at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri

• 1849: Former general Zachary Taylor began his brief term as the 12th president of the United States.
