Arthur Ray Pledger Jr (born August 16, 1981) was born in Mobile, Alabama to Renee McWhorter and Arthur Ray Pledger Sr. He is the oldest of three siblings, Ieshia and Rayshawn Pledger.

Military Carreer

After completing 4 years of Naval Reserve Officers Training and graduating from Lithonia High School in Lithonia Georgia, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps as an E-2. Immediately after his initial training, PFC Arthur Pledger reported to Third Intelligence Battalion to serve under LT Colonel Felix Cubillo as a Ground Sensor Control and Management Specialist. During his tour, then PFC Arthur Pledger participated in several high profile operations, including Ulchi Focus Lens, and the surveillance of the entire island of Okinawa during the Group of 8 or G8 Summit in 2000, where Then President Bill Clinton first introduced Global Health as a topic of interest.

Immediately following a one year tour of duty, Lance Corporal Arthur Pledger was assigned to Marine Wing Communications Squadron 38, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar as a Radio Operator under Major S.J. Pacheco. While there, Lance Corporal Pledger was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Corporal and was awarded a Certificate of Achievement from the Marine Corps Association for becoming Marine of the Quarter on June 15, 2001. Other accolades during this period included a Meritorious Mast in June of 2001, a Certificate of Commendation from Major General Charles Bolden, completion of Cold Weather Training in Bridgeport, California, and assignment to the position of Platoon Guide with Company "A".

On September 17, 2001 Corporal Arthur Pledger was dispatched to Afghanistan with Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 352 VMGR-352, the "Raiders." and attached to Combined Task Force 58, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He flew 600 hours of combat missions from September to December of 2001. Corporal Arthur Pledger and his team of 3 other Satellite Communications experts were based primarily in Jakobabad, Pakistan and Shaikhisa Air Base in Bahrain, UAE. While there, he provided communication links among air, ground, and sea positions while also coordinating troop movement on the ground and in the air via SatComm (sattelite communications).

On December 20th, Corporal Pledger and his team of Marines were relieved from duty by a new team headed by Sergeant Jeanette Winters who on January 9, 2002 became the first woman to die in the War on Terrorism. After returning from Operation Enduring Freedom, Corporal Arthur Pledger was promoted to the rank of Sergeant, and was the recipient of numerous awards, including several Certificates of Appreciation and Commendation, Good Conduct, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, and nominations for the Air Medal, and for the rank of Staff Sergeant. He went on to participate in Operation Iraqi Freedom, where he was also a member of the first wave of ground troops In 2005, Sergeant Pledger was assigned to 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force as a member of the Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company, where he served as the unit's Non Commissioned Officer in Charge and was responsible for the deployment of the Communication Unit's equipment and personnel to South Korea for joint training operations with the Republic of Korea (ROK) Marines.

In 2006, Sergeant Pledger was selected for Recruiting Duty, and was assigned to 4th Marine Corps District, Recruiting Station Louisville.

In 2008 Sergeant Arthur Pledger was awarded the title of Military Scholar by the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans.
