An accomplished character actor, he appeared in 17 movies, including The Hunt for Red October and In the Line of Fire. He usually played an authority figure, such as CIA chief, FBI director, or White House chief of staff. In one movie, Born Yesterday, he played a U.S. senator. In 1994 Thompson was elected to the Senate after defeating Democrat Jim Cooper.
