Warm Gulf waters and a wide variety of recreational activities make Fort Walton Beach a popular area for family vacations. The sugar white sand beaches have attracted people since 500 B.C., when various Indian tribes conducted ceremonies in the area. Just north is Eglin Air Force Base, where General Jimmy Doolittle's "Raiders" trained and which is the headquarters of the Air Force Development Test Center and home of the climatic laboratory.
