Just a few miles north of Orlando and a thirty minute trip from DisneyWorld, Universal and SeaWorld, Maitland, Florida has so many interesting things to do. If you need a break from the theme parks and other touristy attractions Maitland has many free points of interest, family friendly and fun.

Florida Audubon Society's Center for Birds of Prey is east of I-4 on Lee Road, north on Wymore Road, east on Kennedy Blvd., north on East Street, then 1 block north to 1101 Audubon Way. Outdoor cages allow close viewing of up to 22 species of birds of prey in a jungle-like setting. The center features a rehabilitation facility for injured birds. Picnic facilities are available. Historic Waterhouse Residence and Carpentry Shop Museums, .9 miles north of SR 423 on US 17/92, then east to 830 Lake Lily Drive, features the restored 1884 Waterhouse home as well as a carpentry shop where a carpenter demonstrates the woodworking methods of the late 1800s. The Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center of Central Florida is 1.25 miles east of I-4 at 851 North Maitland Avenue (SR 414). The center illustrates key events of the Holocaust through chronological displays, photographs and audiovisual presentations. A memorial wall, built of Jerusalem stone, honors and remembers the six million Jews who died at the hands of the Nazis. Allow 1 hour minimum. Maitland Art Center is 1.5 miles east of I-4 on SR 414 (Maitland Boulevard), .7 miles south on CR 427 (Maitland Avenue), then .2 miles west to 231 W. Packwood Avenue. Originally an artist's colony founded in the 1930s, the center now has changing exhibits which showcase local, regional and national artists and craftspersons. The complex comprises 23 buildings ornamented with murals, bas-reliefs and carvings in Aztec and Mayan styles. Walkways wind through courtyards and gardens. Guided tours are available.
